LIGHT IN MOTION
Pedro Campiche cut his teeth in Lisbon’s graffiti scene before joining the international explosion of muralism in the early 2010s. As AKACORLEONE, his bold colour and character-driven imagery made him a much-loved figure in the movement. He earned his stripes painting colossal murals, learning to use buildings as his canvas and make images that could hold their own at the scale of a city. But as his practice grew, so did his curiosity about what could happen beyond the painted wall.
His work soon expanded into sculpture, ceramics and installation, all of which can be seen here in the exhibition. He also began working extensively with light. AKACORLEONE explores light as a material in its own right, discovering that colour, long important to his visual language, can be carried by light instead of paint. These experiments grew into large scale installations, sending light and colour through architecture and into the spaces around them.
This Territory is LIGHT IN MOTION.
Light behaves differently from paint. It can pass through a surface, bounce across a room or disappear when its source changes.
Natural light adds the dimension of time. What we see in the morning is not the same as what we see later in the day. As the light moves, the work changes with it. Colour, image and shadow shift, making the building, the time of day and even our own position part of the artwork.
